Summary : Natural streamflow regimes are changing globally due to consequences of warming. This is particularly the case in cold regions such as Canada. Through a novel algorithm, a temporally consistent, pan-Canadian assessment of shifts in natural streamflow regimes during 1966 to 2010 is provided in over 100 natural streams in Canada, coast to coast to coast. Through detecting significant trends in class membership of streamflow regimes, inferred from changes in first and second moments of ensemble streamflow features, it is shown that in more than 80% of considered streams, there is a dominant regime shift that can be attributed to simultaneous changes in streamflow characteristics, some of which have remained previously unknown.
