Combining a technical background with a genuine love for meeting people and listening to their water stories, Karl has adopted a multi-disciplinary approach to creating equitable and resilient future water systems. Karl Zimmermann is a PhD candidate, NSERC Vanier Scholar and Friedman Scholar in Health in the department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of British Columbia.

Language: Presentation in English and slide show in English

Summary: Finding safe water solutions for communities requires more than just a technology, but an understanding of the local context : the environment, culture, history, water needs, policy landscape, local construction techniques … Uniting this expertise requires a partnership- a water partnership!

This presentation will share learnings from water champions in Madagascar, Uganda, India, Colombia and Peru about : 1. Who are the important water stakeholders, 2. What are their roles, and 3. What tools ensure that everyone’s opinions are included? We will draw on recommendations and water stories from hundreds of discussions with water team members from households, mayors, government, and international actors to share the success stories and recommendations on how to adopt a water partnership approach to finding sustainable safe water for communities.
