Summary: Monitoring of sewage for viruses has been practiced for more than 40 years to track down cases of poliovirus and determining the success of vaccination programs. Our group at the University of Arizona have been monitoring the wastewater from Tucson and individual dorms at the University of Arizona since the beginning of March 2020. We have been able to measure the impact of interventions (face masks, stay-at-home orders) on infections in the community and identify cases of COVID-19 in dorms on campus before they become clinically recognized. We believe measuring the concentration of pathogens in wastewater has many future applications in assessing the health of a community.

In August 2020, an outbreak was caught before it started because of the wastewater surveillance system.

New series of weekly CentrEau webinars "all about water management". These short 20-minute presentations will be offered live every Thursday at 1 p.m. followed by a short discussion period. CentrEau professors and researchers, as well as guest speakers, will present their research work and its importance in a semi-popularized manner. Watch the previous webinars on our YouTube Channel!
