From models to data: An adequacy-for-purpose view

Invited speaker: Prof. Wendy Parker, philosophy of sciences, Virginia Tech

Abstract: Both philosophers and scientists have advocated the view that evaluation of scientific models -- including mathematical, computational and scale models -- should focus on their adequacy for particular purposes. However, such a view has not been similarly articulated and defended when it comes to data and data models. I discuss some basic elements of an adequacy-for-purpose perspective and apply it in the context of data. I then discuss some of the implications of adopting such a view.
