Student Flood Studies invites anyone interested in the subject to its 8th webinar.

Program

No. 1

Time: 12:00 pm

Guest: Éole Valence (ÉTS)

Title: Deciphering snowpack response to rain-on-snow events to better anticipate winter flooding

Abstract: "Éole will present his master's work, showing that in Quebec, the seasonal snow cover plays an important hydrological role. It shapes the annual hydrograph by modifying the residence time and the path of water from precipitation. The internal properties of the snowpack play an important role in the distribution of meltwater between surface runoff and groundwater recharge. Thus, during rain-on-snow (ROS) events, internal snowpack parameters influence the velocity and amount of liquid water discharging at a system's outlet, potentially promoting winter flooding and ice jams. Recent observations and projections show an increase in the frequency of SWR in many cold regions around the world. This trend would lead to a possible increase in the frequency and intensity of winter flooding and ice jam formation."

Time: 12:30 pm

Guest: Elsa Landaverde, University of Sherbrooke

Title: Respiratory and ENT symptoms following the 2019 spring floods in Quebec

Abstract: "Elsa will then talk about her work in which she will outline that as part of a Quebec study on the sociosanitary impacts of the 2019 spring floods, she and her team sought to assess the impacts on physical and psychological health according to the level of exposure to the floods. Specifically, this component aims to explore respiratory and ENT symptoms following flooding. A population health survey was conducted in the six most affected areas 8 to 10 months after the floods where we collected data, using a survey, on self-reported ENT and respiratory symptoms, as well as primary and secondary stressors, among other variables explored and respiratory."
