U.S. biosolids, solid residues from sludge treated by wastewater treatment plants, have been introduced into Quebec in the agricultural and other sectors.
Informed by the media, the Ordre des chimistes du Québec (OCQ), the Ordre des agronomes du Québec (OAQ) and the Ordre des médecins vétérinaires du Québec (OMVQ) were quick to denounce this practice.
According to the three professional orders, whose mandate is to protect the public, contaminants could be found in such biosolids.
They hope that the Quebec government will move forward with a ban on the importation of biosolids. However, a modernization of the regulations in this area is necessary to do so.
