Not-so-fresh groundwater

22 December 2022

Municipalities in the Lower St. Lawrence and Gaspé regions have to deal with salty groundwater, forcing them to look for fresh water even further away.

This reality is due to the clays deposited during the last ice age, which are rich in salt and tend to contaminate the fresh water drawn from the wells.

If this last explanation applies to the Lower St. Lawrence, in the Gaspé Peninsula, it is rather the coastal flooding that is a threat. Climate change further threatens aquifers because of the decrease in the number of days with protective ice on the coast each year.

The problem is eminently human in that half of the residents of these regions live near the coast. And of these people, many use wells to get their water supply.
